Octeville (LFOH) - Nice Cote D'azure (LFMN)

8 September 2001

Departed: 10:00 Zulu
Arrived: 14:43 Zulu
Total Time: 4hr 43min
Octeville to Nice was the longest leg of the journey so far, and Mike Lima and I set off with a 10Kt nor-west wind and CAVOK conditions. At 500 feet above Octeville's grass strip we turned south and climbed to 4000, and were greeted with some stunning views of Northern France. The route took us south to the L'aigle vor before heading south-east to take advantage of the now 25Kt tail wind. In the back of my mind was Mike Lima's rudder problem, although I had worked out that keeping my feet on the pedals all the time was enough to stop them giving up - it's all too easy in a sim to develop bad habits!

Central France is a very flat place indeed, and after three hours I was delighted to see the mountains of the south looming ahead. By this time the visibility had reduced to 10 miles or less, and the smell of the Med was in the virtual air. Climbing to 6000' we were treated to some spectacular scenery, and very quickly the Nice vor sprang into life on Mike Lima's panel. The last hour seemed like five minutes, and soon we were in the circuit above the azure blue Cap D'age not really wanting to land! Touching down on runway 5L was so smooth it felt as if Mike Lima and I were working as one, and both relishing the many hours together that lay ahead.
