Flight Data: Continuing the occasional historic tours, we'll take off from Tatenhill and visit some of the interesting sites of middle England, both past and present. Immediately after takeoff we'll head to the famous Fauld Crater, the site of the worlds biggest non-nuclear explosion on the 27 November 1944. Killing 70 people and an entire heard of cows, this accidental explosion in an underground munitions dump left a crater over a 100 foot deep and 250 yards wide in the Staffordshire countryside. The site shows up very well with the VFR photographic scenery and VFR Terrain. From here we'll take a leisurely amble down through the Midlands with some (hopefully interesting) commentary on the way.
Notes on Scenery: Although all Shetland Flyer flights in England and Wales can be flown using the default scenery it is
highly recommended that you purchase the VFR Photographic Scenery of England and Wales by
Visual Flight and GetMapping plc, published by Just Flight. Available in four volumes, these
can be purchased separately or as a complete set from
GetMapping.Com, or selected on-line stores and retailers throughout the world. This stunning scenery is made from actual aerial photographs of the UK and allows true VFR flying, and is compatible with both FS2002 and 2004. For the ultimate realism add the Horizon Simulation VFR Terrain package and you will think you're really there!
As a companion to this scenery, and to make your VFR flying as "real as it gets", why not
purchase a set of 1:500,000 or 1:250,000 ICAO/CAA charts of the UK? Available online from Pooleys, Transair
and all good pilot supply stores, these charts are laminated and will last a long time in the simulator
environment. The ¼ mil charts are great as road maps too!
Don't forget the UK2000 series from Garry Summons to compliment your VFR experience: fully compatible with FS2002 and 2004, AND the VFR Photographic Scenery - order and download online from here!
